Parenting ~ Being mom and dad

Parenting is never easy and we are all first time mom and dad. We've never learn how to be a parent and how to raise good kids and how to train them in a good manner that they will grow up to be a successful man and woman. Since the day I was conceived with baby A, I prayed daily that God will impart to me more wisdom on how to bring up our kids. I reflected how my parents brought me up to who I am today and they raised me so well that I'm indeed doing good today. I thank God for them, otherwise I do not know where I am now. I felt such a heavy responsibility to raise up our kids, their future is determined by how well we raise them. I know it's never easy and I know I can't afford to make mistake, but I'm a first-timer. All that I know is by the GRACE of God, through His words, I can do it!

For the past whole week, I've been talking and thinking about parenting. I bought myself a book "Boundaries with kids" and on the first page alone, I've received revelation. Powerful tips that I've never thought of. More to come as I continue reading. And when Ps Kevin from CHC twitted that he will preach about parenting on coming Sunday service, I was beyond thrilled as I know this message came at the right time!

Here's the preaching on Sun by Ps Kevin Loo that I managed to pen down. Read and be blessed!

Being mom and dad, you need to:

1. Seize the day.

Psalm 90:12
Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Never forget your children's birthday, graduation, school events/concerts - they care if you turn up. If your child expect you to turn up, be there. Make time for this special events.

Take time out to play and laugh and learn with them.

Pray with them. Even if they don't like it, keep doing it and they will know it's important. Be consistent and it will be a habit. Organize your baby's life.

This window of opportunity is not very wide. It will last only a short period of time. While they are listening to you, speak into their lives. Let them speak (give them the chance to speak/voice out) and they can learn to express themselves, so they will be open to you. If you don't take time to listen to you when they are young, they will not listen to you when they grow up.

Do today what can only be done today. Cannot postpone today's prayer and pray 2 times longer tomorrow. The danger, the trap lies in the promise of tomorrow!

It's when we are young that we learn the lessons that form the basis for a whole life.

Robert Fulghum ~ ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned:

- Share everything.
- Play fair.
- Don't hit people.
- Put things back where you found them.
- Clean up your own mess.
- Don't take things that aren't yours.
- Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
- Wash your hands before you eat.
- Flush.
- Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
- Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
- Take a nap every afternoon.
- When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

2. To dispel the illusions.

i) I've no choice
ii) I'm busy all day
iii) The slower day is coming - eg: one day, when papa is free, we go to beach.

Busyness is often created from within.

If you accept in your heart that money/career is important, then your child will grow up with that.

Romans 14:5
One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.

3) Catch them telling a lie

Proverb 19:5

This is a process of being independent. Don't go crazy, screaming and yelling at them. Instead take the opportunity to sit them down and talk to them.

4) Kiss your wife in the kitchen but fight in the bedroom

Ecclesiastes 5:18
This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot.

The best thing a father can do for his kids is love their mother.

5) A father's expectation is a powerful tool.

Set expectation base on activities and not performance. Eg, be punctual. You're expected to finish your homework by tomorrow, instead of setting expectations like you must get 10A's.

Set expectation based on attitude.

Micheangelo - The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

I pray that our kids will grow up carrying the image of God. Hugs!

Why COD fish?

COD fish is always known as a very expensive fish and many of you thought I've been pampering my lil girl so much that I eat normal fish but she eats cod. Why I choose to intro COD fish as her first taste bud to fish and not other normal fishes like salmon/selar/groupa or any other cheaper version of fish?

FYI, I'm not bragging that I'm feeding my girl COD because it's expensive neither am I pampering her by only giving her expensive food. All I know is COD fish is high in nutrients and there's nothing to worry like when she grows up, she only takes expensive fish and she doesn't want cheaper version of fish. I believe all mothers out there know what is good and only give good things to their children. Let's compare kampung chicken and normal chicken. Which you will buy for your kids? Of course kampung chicken. Less injection, less chemical , more natural breeding and tastes juicier!

I'm not pampering her, but I know COD fish has higher nutrients compared to other fishes, and I want her to have those nutrients. One of the reasons I intro COD fish first because of her allergy. When we first introduced solid, we started with rice. She was allergic to rice! We were surprised and even her Dr was surprised. So, we stopped rice for a time being and then we intro ikan bilis/anchovies and she got red rashes around her lips. Since then, we kicked off anchovies to another list. Only then I knew anchovies are not good as they sprinkle some chemicals to it so that this dry product last longer. =( Same for pork/chicken, both were kicked out to the "allergy list". Perhaps we shall intro again when she's 1yo. I was a bit worry, if she couldn't take fish/poultry, then will she get enough protein? I started telling myself, if she can only take COD fish, I don't mind buying it for her, as long as she gets the nutrients that she needs =/ I started research and read up a lot of info about fish that is mild, less "fishy" tasting of all fish and causes less allergy in children. The answer is COD/SALMON, the best fish to intro to your 8-9 month old baby. True enough, COD works well with my baby and no allergy! We plan to introduce Salmon next and later moved on to groupa/red snapper. I'm not pampering her, but if I can afford, I will give her the best, especially when it comes to food. A healthy diet brings up a happy baby. If there is a mixture in her diet of different kind of fishes, I believe she won't have the habit of eating only expensive food. And if I didn't tell her that COD is very expensive, she won't know it as well.

Looking at the rashes near her mouth due to food allergy breaks my heart and sometimes I just couldn't help but to worry of her daily diet/nutrients whether she's getting enough.

There are seven benefits when you add cod fish to your diet and you might want to include it in your weekly diet, instead of day in and day out chicken.

Low Calorie: Cod fish contains a little over 100 calories. It is perfect for athletes that need to shed excess weight and body fat.

High in Protein: Cod fish contains over 15 grams of clean protein. All athletes need clean protein which is necessary for lean, muscle tissue growth and repair.

Omega 3s: Cod fish is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are necessary for the human body for proper brain functioning, as well as cardiovascular health. Omega 3 fatty acids can also soothe dry skin, improve circulation, and prevent vision problems.

Heart Protection: By eating cod fish, you are protecting your heart. Combined with the omega 3s, cod is loaded with vitamin A and K to help prevent damage to the heart.

Energy: Cod is packed with energy filled vitamins, such as B6 and B12, which will help you have more energy during your workouts and while performing sports. Vitamin B6 also helps regulate hormonal imbalances, reduces the risk of heart attack, and improves cholesterol levels. Vitamin B12 helps to reduce anemia and anemia's symptoms (which can play a role in fatigue) and boost energy levels (because vitamin B12 helps produce new hemoglobin).

Source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D is needed for healthy skin and bones. Vitamin D is also good for preventing autoimmune diseases and helps control high blood pressure.

Reduced Inflammation: The oils in cod fish are used as an anti-inflammatory. Ingesting cod fish at least two times a week can provide benefits for athletes with joint problems.

Date : 13 June 2012

How far along : 37 weeks

Sleep : When we decided to get a customized Geetha bed for her, only then we knew the other day when we surveyed the price, we gave the wrong measurement. After 2nd calculation, the customized Geetha mattress cost RM450. A huge bomb. We walked away without getting anything for her, not even a Geetha mattress topper which cost RM290. Disappointed. Her coconut fibre mattress is as hard as rock. Sigh... One more month baby, we will get you a nice latex topper at baby fair in July. At the last fair in May, we checked out the price from BabyLove and the latex topper cost RM220.

Best moment this week: I've got my upper teeth growing and mommy spotted them on 4 June! Yeayy!!! 3 choppers growing at the moment and I can now eat Hamburger! Kekeke.... She's learning how to sit up from her tummy position, can stand with support and can sit without support now. But she just loves to be on her tummy ........ She loves playing with her saliva and blow them into bubbles. And yes, she's a dancer! Her body will sway left and right whenever we blast the music. She will dance to her favorite video Barney and the Barney theme song. Perhaps I should consider making Barney as her 1st birthday theme coming Sept.

Favorite Toy : TV cabinet. She loves to pomp pomp with her hand. Haha. I know it's not good to let her play with those things but we couldn't help it. I've tried lying near the tv cabinet so that she couldn't cross over there, but she has a strong fighting spirit. She will not give up until she get to her destination! She will climb with all her strength until she's tired/she will look for other alternative like go through another route to get there... such a smart and sweet baby =)

Baby Vocabulary : Baa Baa Baa, Ta ta ta , Na na na na , Mamm Mammm Mammm, sometimes she sounds like calling mama/dada... *melts*
