God's Love for our City by Pastor Chris Long

God's Love for our Cityby Pastor Christopher Long, Grace Family Sanctuary Banting

Isaiah 58:12
12 Those from among you
Shall build the old waste places;
You shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach,
The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.

Jeremiah 29:7
7 And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.

Be faithful at what God told us to do for our City!! The word "City' appears 1090 times in the Old Testament.

Cities were built with specific purposes
- Some were called store cities, treasure cities, lost cities, cities for refuge, military cities
- God has a purpose for our city.

Isaiah 62:12
12 And they shall call them The Holy People,
The Redeemed of the LORD;
And you shall be called Sought Out,
A City Not Forsaken.

God gives every local congregation :
- A divine destiny
- A unique personality
- Dominant features
- Vision and Mission
(Every church has a right to exist. Do not look down on small churches because churches belong to God and not men!)

Matthew 5:14
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

God has a relationship to every city.

1. The cry of the city
- God hears the cry of the city.

Job 24:12
12 The dying groan in the city,
And the souls of the wounded cry out;
Yet God does not charge them with wrong.

2. God weeps for the city
- Our Lord Jesus wept over Jerusalem with great compassion.

Luke 19:41
41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

3. God speaks to the city

- God uses natural and supernatural ways to speak.

Micah 6:9 (NKJV)
9 The LORD’s voice cries to the city—Wisdom shall see Your name:
"Hear the rod!
Who has appointed it?"

Micah 6:9 (Amplified Bible)
9The voice of the Lord calls to the city [Jerusalem]--and it is sound wisdom to hear and fear Your name--Hear (heed) the rod and Him Who has appointed it.

Micah 6:9 (NLT)
9 Fear the Lord if you are wise!
His voice calls to everyone in Jerusalem:
"The armies of destruction are coming;
the Lord is sending them."

Micah 6:9 (NLT)
9 Listen! The LORD is calling to the city— and to fear your name is wisdom— Heed the rod and the One who appointed it.

4. God sends ministries to the city.

- God's desire for our city is revival and not judgement.
- We bring the message of grace, salvation and hope.

Luke 9:52-56
52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;
53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.
54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?
55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them,
56 and they went to another village.

Jonah 1:2
2 Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.

Nehemiah 4:20
20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!
